Manuscript ship's log containing daily entries of latitude, longitude, weather and winds, and "remarks" for the Monmouth's tour of duty in the Indian Ocean from 1783 to 1784. Included are details on an engagement with the French fleet on June 21, 1783; news of the Treaty of Paris peace three months later; and comments on shipboard life, such as outbreaks of fever, disciplary actions, provisions, ship sightings, routine repairs, and contacts with other vessels.

Richard Howe, Earl Howe, was born in London, England, on March 19, 1726, the son of Emanuel Scrope Howe (1699-1735) and Mary Sophia Charlotte von Kielmansegg (1703-1782).
